Lapine Lullaby by Milla Jade Kuiper
Lapine Lullaby by Milla Jade Kuiper
poetry
I’ve a rabbit’s heart
and black eyes to match.
When I slept beside you, our backs touching,
I shivered like a little beast.
I’ve sharpened my teeth on bricks I hold to hurl, and red
dust scabbed in my enamel, I bite any tender finger
that could claw.
When you reached down
to unsnarl leaves from my hair,
your gaze the dimpled sunlight,
I darted like a hunted thing,
but the night your heart became home,
our hair curled together, leaves on the forest floor,
you were perhaps small as I
and shaking too.
