When creating this sculpture, I wanted to focus upon the concept of preserving Black identity. Presented in 7 inches x 2.5 inches x 3 inches, this Cast Iron display shows the head of a Black figure being upholstered on a podium. Resting atop the head of the figure sits a disheveled crown rooted onto its head. I wanted to use this imagery to show how Black success and talent can be sometimes viewed as a temporary display that other cultures try to commodify rather than it being respected on its own merit.
